How to Set Limits Before You Gamble
Every effective responsible gambling strategy starts before the first bet, not after the first loss.
Step 1: Set a maximum loss amount
Before you open a casino app, decide the maximum amount you are willing to lose in this session. This amount should be money you can genuinely afford to lose without it affecting your rent, bills, food, or savings. Write it down. When you reach it, stop — regardless of what happened in the session.
Step 2: Set a time limit
Decide in advance how long you are going to play. Set a timer on your phone. When it goes off, close the app. Time distortion is one of the key mechanisms by which gambling becomes problematic — sessions that feel like thirty minutes are often two hours.
Step 3: Use the casino's own limit tools
All licensed casino operators are required to offer deposit limits, loss limits, and session time limits in their account settings. Set these before your first deposit. A £50 deposit limit stops you depositing more than £50 in a day, week, or month — depending on what you set. It is much easier to maintain when configured in advance.
Step 4: Do not gamble under stress
Gambling while emotionally distressed — after a hard day, during an argument, or when feeling anxious — increases the risk of chasing losses and making decisions you would not normally make. The sessions where players describe losing control are almost always emotionally charged ones.
Step 5: Review your gambling periodically
Once a month, review your gambling records. Most casinos provide a transaction history and session log in your account. If your actual spend exceeds your planned limits, or if sessions are running longer than you intended, that is information you need to act on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I reach my limit but feel I can win it back?
That feeling is called chasing a loss and it is one of the core mechanisms of problem gambling. Stop. The next session will not reliably recover what you lost.
Can I set limits that the casino enforces for me?
Yes. Deposit and loss limits configured in your casino account settings are enforced automatically. You typically cannot increase them immediately — there is usually a 24 to 72 hour cooling-off period before an increase takes effect.
What is a reality check?
A reality check is a timed notification that appears during a session to show you how long you have been playing and how much you have wagered. Most licensed casinos offer this feature in settings.
