Casino Bankroll Management — How to Make Your Money Last
Bankroll management does not change the house edge. But it determines how long you play and how much a session costs.
The purpose of bankroll management
Bankroll management is not a way to win. The house edge means that over enough rounds, the casino wins. Bankroll management controls how long you play, how much variance you are exposed to, and how much a session costs you. It maximises entertainment for a given budget — not profit.
The 1–5% rule
A widely used guideline is to bet no more than 1–5% of your total session bankroll on a single spin or round. At 1%, a £100 session bankroll means £1 per spin. This gives you at least 100 rounds before you run out of money — more, because not every spin is a total loss.
Separating session bankrolls
Set aside a specific amount for gambling as a completely separate budget from your living expenses. This is the only money you gamble with. Never supplement it with money from other parts of your budget, no matter what happens in a session.
Stop-loss rules
A stop-loss rule says: if I lose X% of my session bankroll, I stop. At 50%, you have enough left to make another decision on another day. Combined with a win target (I stop if I double my starting amount), a stop-loss rule creates structure around a session that emotion alone does not provide.
What does not work
Martingale (doubling after every loss) sounds logical but fails when a losing streak depletes your bankroll before the next win. Systems that increase bets after wins also fail — they are just moving money around inside the same negative-expectation game.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big should my casino bankroll be?
Enough to last a session at your intended stake level without going broke from normal variance. For a high-volatility slot at £1 per spin, a £100 session bankroll is on the low end. £200–£300 is more comfortable.
Can bankroll management turn a losing strategy into a winning one?
No. Bankroll management does not change the house edge or the expected value of any bet. It only affects how long you play and how your money is distributed across sessions.
Should I use winnings from one session as my next session bankroll?
You can, but treat winnings as real money and bank the amount you originally planned to spend. Using all winnings as next-session bankroll is a reliable way to return everything to the casino eventually.
